A. Opti Learn to Sail (Wet Feet)

For kids aged 7-9, this course is offered in two-week sessions, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm during July and August. The program does not operate August 7. This is an introduction to sailing for the young child with no previous experience. In stable, sturdy Optimist dinghies (designed specifically for beginners), sailors learn basic steering and sail control skills in a small-group environment. Off the water, instructors teach the points of sail, boat parts, and weather and safety information through games and interactive lessons. Highlights of this program include surprise theme days and excursions to the beach. This program emphasizes safety, fun, and learning, and provides ideal preparation for CANSail 1 & 2.

B. Cansail 1 & 2

This is a basic youth sailing course for new sailors or those with limited sailing experience, 9 years of age or older. This course is offered in two-week sessions, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm during July and August. The program does not operate August 7. Sailors are introduced to the sport and learn the fundamentals while sailing in 420s and RS Fevas. The course covers the basic elements of sailing theory (parts of the boat, points of sail) and on-water skills in safety, crewing, steering, and seamanship. Sailors also learn basic physical literacy through fun activities and sailing games. As in the Optimist Program, the emphasis is on safety, fun, and teaching young sailors to confidently handle a small dinghy. Note: Participants in this program learn the vital CYA safety skill of righting a capsized sailboat, so be prepared to get wet!!

C. CANSail 3 & 4

This youth course is offered in four-week sessions, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm during July and August. The program does not operate August 7. In double-handed 420s and RS Fevas, sailors build on existing skills in all types of conditions and to a higher level of proficiency. Sailors are introduced to concepts such as right of way, reading wind and waves, proper use of sail controls and tactical mark roundings. CANSail 4 participants are introduced to double-handed skills like spinnaker and trapeze. This program emphasizes high-performance sailing and basic racing, and acts as a foundation for the Senior Racing Team. Because of the more advanced nature of this program, a four-week commitment is required. All doublehanded race team members should enroll in the July session of Cansail 3 & 4, plus optionally register in Spring doublehanded training and can also add the two week doublehanded session in August.

D. Doublehanded Race Team August 2 Week Session

Doublehanded racers can add this session to create a six week session in combination with the July CANSail 3 & 4 session. Must take July CANSail 3 & 4 to register in this session.

E. Laser Radial Team CANSail 5 & 6

The focus for young athletes in CANSail 5&6 is on integrating higher-level boat handling skills in on-water drills and on-shore coaching sessions. Participants supply their own boats. The program operates Sunday afternoon sessions noon - 4:00 pm in May, June, Sept and October and the program includes a core eight-week period Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm during July and August. Centered on the training camp atmosphere, sailors will refine advanced sailing skills and learn racing rules, tactics, strategy, and regatta preparation. Sailing in Laser Radials, Race Team members spend the season competing at local, regional or international regattas throughout Ontario and elsewhere. Note: This program requires 4 to 6 weekends of travel and demands a high level of commitment from both sailors and their parents. Parents must chaperone and tow boats when participants are away at regattas. Parents who tow will be reimbursed for travel expenses. Regatta fees and travel expenses (transportation, lodging, and food) are not covered in the program fee.

F. Junior Race Green Fleet

This youth program includes spring and fall training on Sundays noon to 4:00 pm and a core nine-week program operating Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm during July and August. Rates shown are early-bird rates. Increased rates apply after March 31. For young sailors aged 8-14 interested in learning how to race, this program offers an excellent opportunity to practice in a small group with dedicated race coaches. No previous racing experience is required however students should enjoy time on the water and have a growing interest in the sport. Students are taught in racing Optimists, the international youth racing standard. If you do not have a boat, charters are available, see separate boat charter option on the registration page. Junior Membership at ABYC is included with enrollment. Participants have the opportunity to participate in a minimum of 3 regattas at local, regional and international levels, depending on their personal objectives. Programs are offered on Sundays noon - 4:00 in May and June, Monday to Friday during July and August and on Sundays noon - 4:00 in September and October. Participants have the ability to work on achieving CANSail levels during the program's duration. This program requires a minimum of 3 weekends of travel and demands a moderate commitment from both sailors and their parents, who will be asked to chaperone at regattas and/or help provide transportation to races. In addition, regatta fees and travel expenses (transportation, lodging, and food) are not covered in the program fee.

H. Junior Race Optimist Charter

For sailors enrolled in the Junior Race programs, Optis are available from the club for charter. The hull, foils in a foilbag and sails rolled in a sailbag will be provided to you on the first day of the program in a locker in the sailing school building. The charter agreement requires that the equipment be returned to the same location without damage. Any damage must be reported and the charter agreement requires that participants reimburse the club for the cost of the damage.
