A1. Opti Learn to Sail (Wet Feet)

This is an ideal introduction to sailing for the young child aged 7-9** with little or no previous experience. This course is offered in two-week sessions, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:00* pm during July and August; drop off starts at 8:30*.

This program emphasizes fun while learning the basics of sailing, in a safe and nurturing environment. It is the ideal preparation for CANSail 1 & 2, and hopefully a life-long love of sailing beyond! The boats are provided, with children learning in super stable dinghies that are designed specifically for beginners. Sailors will learn basic steering and sail control skills in a small-group environment. Off the water, instructors teach the points of sail, boat parts, and weather and safety information through games and interactive lessons. Other highlights of this program include surprise theme days and excursions to the beach.

Please note that our successful Covid protocols from the 2020 season will remain in place, and adapted as necessary, until further advice from the relevant authorities. This includes one child per boat, unless from the same family/household. If and when "bubble" families are allowed by the Province, children may sail together in the same boat when both sets of parents/guardians sign the appropriate waiver. Further details on our policies can be found at abyc.ca

Refunds are subject to a 3.5% fee. Non-Covid related refunds within 30 days of program start date are subject to review.

*Times may vary slightly pending Covid protocols around staggered arrival and departure procedures

**Some exceptions to the age limit might be possible on a case by case basis. Please contact sailingschooldirector@abyc.ca to discuss.

A2. Cansail 1 & 2

Participants in this course are 9* years of age or older, with little or no sailing experience. The sailors work towards earning the internationally recognized CANSail certification, levels 1 & 2. This course is offered in two-week sessions, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:00** pm during July and August; drop off starts at 8:30**

Sailors are introduced to the sport and learn sailing fundamentals while sailing in club boats. These can include Picos, 420s and RS Fevas. The course covers the basic elements of sailing theory (parts of the boat, points of sail) and on-water skills in safety, crewing, steering, and seamanship. Sailors also learn basic physical literacy through fun activities and sailing games. As with the WetFeet Program, the emphasis is on fun, safety, and teaching young sailors to confidently handle a small dinghy. Note: Participants in this program learn the vital CYA safety skill of righting a capsized sailboat, so be prepared to get wet!!

Please note that our successful Covid protocols from the 2020 season will remain in place, and adapted as necessary, until further advice from the relevant authorities. Sailors build on their sailing skills using club boats. These can include Picos, 420s and RS Fevas. The course covers the on-water skills and theory to earn CANSail 3 & 4 certification, building on existing skills in all types of conditions and to a higher level of proficiency. Sailors are introduced to concepts such as right of way, reading wind and waves, proper use of sail controls and tactical mark roundings. The CANSail 4 participants are introduced to double-handed skills including spinnaker and trapeze.

A4. Doublehanded High Performance Race Team, CANSail 5 & 6

Due to the higher level of skill and commitment required for this program, the Double Handed Team is available to sailors that have been selected and invited to participate by our Head of Racing Programs. Of course, we may not be aware of your interest, so please contact racingprograms@abyc.ca or sailingschooldirector@abyc.ca to discuss the suitability and readiness of your sailor participate in this program. We are always keen to welcome new racers onto the team!

Sailing in ABYC's very best 420 dinghies, the racers will be exposed to higher-level boat handling skills through on-water drills and on-shore coaching sessions while attending various regattas. We expect that Double Handed sailing partners, who are not from the same family or household, will have to agree to being a "bubble" in accordance with provincial guidelines with both sets of parents/guardians signing the appropriate waiver. This is obviously a dynamic situation and we will respond and adapt as best as we can.
