This is an ideal introduction to sailing for the young child aged 6-8** with little or no previous experience. This course is offered as a one-week program with sessions running Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This program emphasizes fun while learning the basics of sailing, in a safe and nurturing environment. It is the ideal preparation for CANSail 1 & 2, and hopefully a life-long love of sailing beyond! The boats are provided, with children learning in super stable dinghies that are designed specifically for beginners. Sailors will learn basic steering and sail control skills in a small-group environment. Off the water, instructors teach the points of sail, boat parts, and weather and safety information through games and interactive lessons. Other highlights of this program include surprise theme days and excursions to the beach.
**Some exceptions to the age limit might be possible on a case-by-case basis. Please contact sailingschoolinstructor@abyc.ca to discuss.
There are no refunds within 30 days of the program start date, and all refunds are subject to a 3.5% fee.

The sailors work towards earning the internationally recognized CANSail certification, levels 1 & 2. This course is offered as a two-week program two-week program in July and August. There is the option of taking a one-week course last week of June, and last week of August - however, please note this is likely not enough to earn certification.
Sessions run Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00* p.m.
Sailors are introduced to the sport and learn sailing fundamentals while sailing in ABYC's fleet of boats. These include RS Zests, RS Fevas and C420s. The course covers the basic elements of sailing theory (parts of the boat, points of sail) and on-water skills in safety, crewing, steering, and seamanship. Sailors also learn basic physical literacy through fun activities and sailing games. As with the Wet Feet Program, the emphasis is on fun, safety, and teaching young sailors to confidently handle a small dinghy. Note: Participants in this program learn the vital safety skill of righting a capsized sailboat, so be prepared to get wet!!

Mon-Fri, 9:00 - 4:00
Participants in this course have completed their CANSail2 certification, or have significant equivalent sailing experience. The sailors will be working towards earning the internationally recognized CANSail certification, levels 3 & 4**Due to the more advanced nature of this program, a four-week commitment is required. This is a four-week session, running Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. However, please note two-week sessions are available in August.
Sailors build on their sailing skills using club boats. These can include C420s, RSZests and RS Fevas. The course covers the on-water skills and theory to earn CANSail 3 & 4 certification, building on existing skills in all types of conditions and to a higher level of proficiency. Sailors are introduced to concepts such as right of way, reading wind and waves, proper use of sail controls and tactical mark roundings. There may also be the exciting opportunity to try their hand at racing in a local regatta (additional regatta fee to host club additional, approx. $150). The CANSail 4 participants are introduced to double-handed skills including spinnaker and trapeze.
** There are many factors that determine the length of time required to pass a level, and some sailors may require more than one session before passing their level. This is especially so if they take the two-week session.

This program is aimed at youth aged 8 to 12 that want to get out on the water this summer and have some fun!! They will enjoy a variety of watercraft, including sailing dinghies, kayaks and SUPs. The instructor is a Sail Canada certified instructor, and will be teaching techniques and skills found in the CANSail curriculum. Please note however, with a greater emphasis on fun on the water, this course does not earn CANSail Certification. Of course, it serves to teach new skills, improve existing technique and for many, will be a stepping stone to taking their levels at a later date.
Participants will get to experience a variety of water craft with a fleet that includes Wayfarers (CL16), Kayaks, RS Fevas, SUPs and C420s. Highlights include cruising to an isolated beach for a BBQ, and possibly even as far as the Islands!
The program runs as a one-week session, Mon-Fri 9:00 - 4:00. Participants should bring their own pfd. All watercraft are provided by ABYC.
